Calabrian Beef Lentil Skillet
Calabrian Beef Lentil Skillet brings ground beef, tender lentils, tomatoes, and spinach together in a warm, spoonable dinner with a little peppery heat. The lentils go in already cooked, so you can focus on one skillet rather than watch another pot.
The Calabrian pepper sauce gives the tomatoes a tangy kick. A tablespoon flavors the whole pan without turning it into a bowl of hot sauce. Pepper sauces vary, though, so check the jar before you begin. This recipe uses Mezzetta Calabrian Pepper Sauce, which contains roasted red peppers and distilled vinegar.

What to Know Before You Start
Use whole brown or green lentils that are cooked and drained. They should be tender enough to eat but still hold their shape. Dry lentils need their own cooking time and water; they cannot go straight into this recipe in place of the cooked amount.
The beef is 93% lean, and its juices stay in the pan. Diced tomatoes bring the liquid, while a little tomato paste helps the sauce cling to the beef and lentils. Baby spinach goes in last so it wilts without cooking through the entire simmer.
Look at the pepper sauce ingredient list as well as its name. Some Calabrian products contain wine vinegar or are much more concentrated. Choose the specified sauce made with distilled vinegar for this version. A different product changes both the flavor and the nutrition estimate.
Brown the Beef Before Adding the Sauce
Give the onion a few minutes in the warm oil before adding the beef. Stir often enough to keep it from catching on the bottom, then break the beef into small pieces as it cooks. Smaller pieces mix more evenly with the lentils.
Cook the ground beef until it reaches 160°F (71°C), verified with a food thermometer. Check several places in the meat. Brown color or the absence of pink does not tell you whether ground beef has reached a safe temperature.

Mix the Tomato and Lentil Base
Once the beef is ready, stir in the garlic and oregano briefly. Follow with the tomato paste and pepper sauce. Keep stirring during this short step so the paste does not stick and scorch.
Add the diced tomatoes with all their juice, the cooked lentils, and the measured water. Stir gently so the lentils stay whole. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer rather than a hard boil.
Let it cook uncovered until everything is hot and the sauce is thick enough to scoop. The exact time depends on how wet the lentils and tomatoes are. If the bottom starts to look dry before the mixture is heated through, stir in a tablespoon or two of water.

Finish with the Spinach
Fold in the spinach in two additions. The first handful will make room for the rest as it wilts. Stir just until the leaves soften and the mixture is hot, then divide the skillet into four equal portions.
The finished dish should be thick and spoonable, with visible lentils and small pieces of beef. It does not need a garnish or another sauce.
More Simple Ground-Meat Dinners
If you like a skillet with beans and vegetables, try the Ground Turkey, Sweet Potato & White Bean Skillet. It offers a different ground-meat dinner without the Calabrian pepper sauce.
For a baked ground-beef option, the Hot Honey Beef & Cottage Cheese Sweet Potato Boats pair the beef with sweet potato and cottage cheese. Keep those toppings separate from this recipe's nutrition estimate.
Store and Reheat Safely
Refrigerate leftovers in shallow containers within two hours of cooking, or within one hour when the room or outdoor temperature is above 90°F. Keep the refrigerator at 40°F or below and use the leftovers within three to four days.
Reheat a portion covered, adding a splash of water if the lentils have absorbed the sauce. Stir during reheating and use a food thermometer to check that the food reaches 165°F throughout.
Estimated Nutrition
One-fourth of the skillet provides approximately 370 calories, 35 g protein, 30 g carbohydrate, 12 g fat, and 10 g fiber. The estimate uses 93% lean beef with its juices retained, unsalted cooked lentils, no-salt-added tomatoes and paste, and the specified pepper sauce. Brands and portion sizes affect the numbers; side dishes and extra toppings are not included.
Calabrian Beef Lentil Skillet
Make Calabrian Beef Lentil Skillet with ground beef, whole lentils, tomatoes, and spinach. A warm, gently spicy dinner made in one pan.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 medium yellow onion, diced (about 110 g peeled)
- 1 pound 93% lean ground beef
- 1/2 teaspoon table salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano leaves
- 2 tablespoons no-salt-added tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon Mezzetta Calabrian Pepper Sauce, made with distilled vinegar
- 1 (14.5-ounce) can no-salt-added diced tomatoes, with juice
- 2 cups whole brown or green lentils, cooked, drained, unsalted
- 1/4 cup water, plus 1–2 tablespoons if needed
- 3 ounces baby spinach
Instructions
Set a 12-inch deep-sided skillet over medium heat. Add the oil and onion. Cook, stirring, for about 4–5 minutes, until the onion begins to soften.
Add the beef, salt, and black pepper. Break the beef into small pieces and cook for about 6–8 minutes. Cook the ground beef until it reaches 160°F (71°C), verified with a food thermometer. Check several places in the meat; color alone is not a doneness test. Retain the juices for this lean-beef formulation.
Stir in the garlic and oregano for about 30 seconds. Add the tomato paste and Calabrian sauce and stir for about 1 minute.
Add the diced tomatoes with their juice, cooked lentils, and water. Bring to a gentle simmer. Cook uncovered for about 6–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until hot throughout and thick enough to scoop. Add 1–2 tablespoons water only if the pan becomes dry before the mixture is heated.
Fold in the spinach in two additions. Cook, stirring, for about 2–3 minutes, until wilted. Divide into four equal portions and serve hot.
Recipe Tip
Cook the lentils before starting; the stated time does not include cooking dry lentils. The estimated nutrition and flavor assume the named pepper sauce rather than a concentrated chili paste. No tested substitution or physical kitchen test is claimed. Follow the storage and reheating instructions above.
